- Requirements - CHARISMA + RITUALS Difficulty 4
(if disputed the difficulty is raised to 6)
- Rite Master (Formal Title: Inceptor)
- Witnesses: An Assembled Sept During Moot
- Minimum Preparation and Casting Time: 20 Minutes
- Spirits Involved: Tribal Totem, Sept Totem, Pack Totem, Renown Spirits (to carry the tale)
Imagery: Standing in a place of prominence, the Inceptor and
any assistants (usually Galliards) quiet the assembled Garou. The sept does not know if the
Inceptor will chastise (strip Renown) or praise (award Renown). (Remember,
an "Accomplishment" is not always a "praiseworthy" accomplishment)
All that is known is that at least one Garou has done some deed that is
noteworthy enough that all of the Garou Nation shall learn of it.
The Inceptor points to the Garou who will get the Rite performed on
them and calls out their full names (or as much of the name as known by the Inceptor)
telling them to come forward. As the Garou steps forth, the Inceptor (or most often, one of
the Inceptor's Galliard assistants) begin to list all of the things the Garou did
to earn (or lose) the Renown.
Now the Inceptor (or the other assistant) calls for those who would
add to, or challenge the deeds of the subject to step forth and say their
piece.
(Note: If anyone steps forth to challenge
the deeds, this is one of THE GRAVEST INSULTS that can be heaped
upon a Garou. If, this happens, the subject must immediately make a Frenzy
Check, if they fail (and Frenzy), the Renown Challenge is shown to have
some truth to it and the Rite is over. The subject loses those Temporary Renown points and must start over.)
If the Garou succeeds in the Frenzy Check, AND the Inceptor finds that
the challenge is unfounded (or will not effect the Renown). Then the Rite
goes on unhindered (the difficulty is still 6) and no one may speak of the challenge to the Renown
for 6 weeks, the subject earned the Renown. Talking behind a Garou's back
about the Renown Challenge after being cleared of the charges can sometimes
result in a Death Duel. Even Ragabash are rarely allowed to break this rule.
After all challengers/defenders have finished (any added Temp. Renown are applied to gaining the next Permanent) the Inceptor does the required dice roll (any modifiers et al). If the roll fails, the Inceptor received a vision from the Spirits
that the Garou is unworthy in some way. The subject loses the 10 Temporary Renown and must earn it all over again. (Yes, if the Rite Master fails
the test, the subject doesn't get Renown...no one ever said being a Garou
was either easy or fair). If the Inceptor botches, he/she/it receives a vision that the Garou is truly unworthy and must undergoe a pennance of some sort or NOBODY will ever perform a Rite of Accomplishment for them again, AND they lose the 10 Temporary Renown.
If the roll is successful, the Inceptor asks if any would like to speak a special commendation for the subject (usually a Mentor, Pack Alpha, or friend). Then afterwards, in the restored silence, the Inceptor
speaks these words:
"By these deeds [subjects name] shall
be made greater
in [his/her] Pack, [his/her]
Tribe, [his/her] Sept, and among all of The
People everywhere! Long may [his/her] songs
be sung!"
Special Notes:
The Rite Inceptor (during and only during) the enacting of a Rite may inflict
1 to 5 points of Negative Temporary Wisdom Renown to any Garou who talks, acts
up, or otherwise disrupts the Rite. Ragabash may only be awarded Negative
Renown if they do it habitually (they are allowed some leeway).
Additionally, this Rite is not the only way a Garou may convert Temporary to Permanent Renown. The Garou may also challenge a higher ranked Garou (just like to gain a higher rank). If successful, the Garou gains the Permanent Renown, if unsuccessful the Garou loses all the Temporary Renown and must start over.
